Mount Kilimanjaro is with its 5891 meters, the highest mountain in Africa and undoubtedly one of the most represented silhouettes in Tanzania and throughout the African continent. Thousands of adventurers arrive in Tanzania with the desire to crown the roof of Africa, for this there are several routes established with different difficulty, depending on whether what you are looking for is a more demanding and professional ascent or a quiet ascent without difficulties and suitable for all ages and physical conditions. In dreams of Africa safari we will guide you on this high-altitude journey, where nature and personal self-improvement will be the motivation that will take you to the top.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL
We will pick you up at Kilimanjaro Airport, one of our guides will be waiting for you at the airport, to help you with your luggage and transfer you in our private vehicle to your accommodation in Moshi. In our cars you will have fresh water as well as wifi network. Moshi is a small town of 150,000 inhabitants, located at the foot of the southern slope of the majestic Kilimanjaro, the giant we will set out to crown, so there is no better place to start our journey. Once at the hotel, you can rest and finish with the guide who will accompany you all the details of the expedition.
DAY 2: MOSHI / MANDARA HUT (2700 M)
In the morning, after breakfast, a vehicle will transfer you to the Marangu entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. The journey from Moshi to Marangu is a marvel of tropical rural landscape: coffee, bananas, tobacco, all kinds of flowers and tropical fruits, giant baobabs… All this with the immense Kilimanjaro in the background. Mount Kilimanjaro is located in northern Tanzania, next to the Kenyan border. And it has an elevation of 5.895 m. This ancient volcano, with the summit covered with perpetual snow, rises in the middle of a savannah plain, offering a unique spectacle. Marangu will be the starting point of this ascent itinerary, and there you will meet the team of porters and cooks. The start of the ascent to the Mandara refuge takes about four hours, per track at the beginning and good path between the jungle later. Overnight in shelter.
Distance: 7 kilometers
Climbing level: 910 meters
DAY 3: MANDARA HUT (2700 M) / HOROMBO HUT (3600)
The first leg of the day begins with a moderate slope, until reaching the area of greatest vegetation and humid forest, a landscape of tropical forest will accompany you until 3,000 meters. From this height, the landscape is transformed into a savannah of height, a constant landscape until the last stage, when you will enter a high mountain area. You can walk among giant lobelias, savannah flowers such as the “red hot pecker”, senecios – the most spectacular species in the area- and savannah shrubs, until reaching, in about five or six hours, to Horombo Hut. There you can enjoy a set of “bungalow” shelters, houses to cook and with a large shelter-dining room. The views towards Moshi and Arusha from this altitude are magnificent. From here you can see Mount Mawenzi (5,149 m), twin of Uhuru Peak, as the locals call the summit of Kilimajaro.
Distance: 11 kilometres
Climbing level: 950 metres
DAY 4:HOROMBO HUT (3600 M) ACCLIMATIZATION DAY
Today we dedicate the day to improving acclimatization and rest. We will walk through a spectacular environment with stunning views to the surroundings of Zebra Rocks, named for their peculiar color that mimics the skin of a zebra. There we will take some photographs of the fantastic landscapes that surround us and return to our Camp horombo Hut to sleep. Do not miss the opportunity to observe the wonderful African night sky, without any light pollution, which will give you a beautiful starry spectacle.
DAY 5: HOROMBO HUT (3600 M) / KIBO HUT (4600 M)
We will start walking very early to complete the ascent through a landscape that becomes more arid, wild and moon-like. We are already on high mountain. When we arrive at the Kibo refuge, we will take a well-deserved rest, enjoy the breathtaking views offered by this formidable place and we will be able to study the itinerary that we will follow to the crater of Kilimanjaro a few hours later.
Distance: 10 kilometers
Climbing level: 1,010 meters
DAY 6:KIBO HUT (4600 M) / KILIMANJARO (5895 M) / HOROMBO HUT
We will get up at midnight and have a little snack before making the ascent to Gillman’s Point (5,680 m), already on the ridge. The first section has a moderate and maintained slope and is a key point in the ascent. When we reach the ridge, the route that separates us to the summit of Uhuru Peak is easy but because of the altitude it is hard. Our guide will always accompany you to the main summit, so we invite you to make one last effort and maintain the illusion until you reach the roof of Africa. An intermediate point on the ridge is Stella Point (5,700 m), where the Marangu and Machame routes meet. From that point we began to skirt the diamond glacier, an impressive barrier of seracs, eternal ice just three degrees south of latitude above the equator. The reward to so much effort is found at the summit of Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak (5,895 m.), and the sights of a unique sunrise on the planet. After a while, we descend to Kibo Hut, where we will take a well-deserved rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut, where we will spend the night.
Distance: 18 kilometers
Climbing level: 1205 meters
Descent slope: 2210 meters
DAY 7: HOROMBO SHELTER (3600 M) / MOSHI
We will resume our way down the already well-known ascent route to the Marangu entrance. There our private vehicle Will be waiting for you, which will take you to your hotel in Moshi. If you feel energized, we invite you to tour the city and mingle with its people, or invest the day in recovering energy and taking your well-deserved rest.
